A GE tryptophan supplement unexpectedly contained a toxic byproduct that permanently maimed hundreds of people and killed others, while the Flavr Savr tomato produced stomach lesions and unexplained mortality in mice. In both cases, the responsible agency, FDA, covered up the evidence and officially proclaimed there was no evidence of harm due to genetic engineering.
