its all work....but i can port mine to java; but still does that make a difference.
what i do know...is meta-dev, i dev while others are using it. off live data.
as for the long time it takes to create your own abstraction and p2p platform...think of it this way...."its never done" but once you get above a certain level of understanding...it becomes really cool.
i also think another problem is, their are very few people who get it; everyone i know does web developpment for various marketing companies.
like, i can read "David's" code and understand what he is doing...i've lifted a line or two; and he can look at mine, and say, "well, it looks good." :) but there is a level of understanding.
most developers today think java/php/ror/etc. and can't go beyond that.

Sure, building a totally general solution is hard and takes years. Porting
to that esoteric flavor of Unix isn't easy.
But building a sufficiently general solution that is adequate for *your*
needs on the places *you* need to be isn't really that hard. And I agree
with Alex that it's often significantly more difficult to learn and adapt a
big, complex, uber-generalized solution to your specific needs, than to just
build a specific solution yourself. It's also more fun and more rewarding,
if that sort of thing matters to you.
Clearly, this is a matter of opinion. But to the lurkers out who are
considering, don't be afraid to roll your own and make up your own opinion.
