No.  In fact, in a truly decentralized system, you can't really have a
'closed' protocol; there is no way to keep it a secret.

You'd do much better to focus on making sure your protocol has
mechanisms to protect peers from malicious behavior, and document the
protocol openly.

In many ways, the main product of a p2p system is the protocol.
Everything else is just supports.
