Hi folks -

Just a little update on Penumbra: the generic packet injection interface
patches I wrote for the mac80211 stack have been accepted in the last
few days into Linus' git tree.

For wireless devices with drivers using mac80211, from kernel 2.6.23rc1
onwards normal unpatched distro kernels will start to allow generic
unencrypted ieee80211 packet injection and reception across the range of
mac80211 drivers using a single radiotap-based packet header system...
in short stock 2.6.23+ kernels will be "Penumbra ready".

Many other interesting protocols are possible using the ability
selectively broadcast and receive unencrypted packets from people around
you. I wrote an example small usermode applet with sources to send and
receive unencrypted packets here:

and there is more info about penumbra and its sources here:

http://penumbra.warmcat.com/_twk/tiki-index.php?page=Implementation
http://penumbra.warmcat.com/_twk/tiki-index.php?page=Downloads

and both are in git here:
