Shouldn't neglect the obvious effects of scale, not that anyone is,
nor the changing demographics of the skype nodes. An increasing
proportion of them are MS Vista with its different networking and
firewall, and also an increasing proportion are embedded appliances
that presumably don't contribute to the P2P resources of the network.

Perhaps it took that long for the new AI to be born?
My additional question is "Was the crash one event?" I wonder if
there weren't phases in its evolution, where first a lot of nodes
rebooting degraded some network metric to a point where a recovery
phase began and, while that was happening, a lot of nodes coming up
again collided with it. If one had listened with the right ears at
the time, could one have heard the echoes?
