I'm not sure "file lifetime" is the right measure.  (I know I have a lot of
"fake" content that just sorta sits there until I run out of HD space.)  In
the case of video, I'd recommend some sort of end-to-end integration with
the player itself, and then gather stats on whether the file is viewed to
completion.

Or, even simpler, just have a big "fake" button built into the download
client.  The data it'd gather would be dirty, but probably good enough.

The relevant IETF protocol would actually be ICE (STUN is just one
component), but I'd strongly recommend running in fear from it and building
your own version that uses the same basic algorithm but with vastly
simplified messaging appropriate to your application.
