I'm not sure "file lifetime" is the right measure. (I know I have a lot of "fake" content that just sorta sits there until I run out of HD space.) In the case of video, I'd recommend some sort of end-to-end integration with the player itself, and then gather stats on whether the file is viewed to completion. Or, even simpler, just have a big "fake" button built into the download client.
