************
Introduction
************

Widely acknowledged benefits of open-source software (OSS) include
reliability, low development and maintenance costs, as well as rapid
evolution. However, OSS adoption and integration within complex
industrial-strength applications such as telecommunications, business
management and embedded systems is still quantitatively and qualitatively
less successful than it could be, even in presence of detailed adoption
guidelines. This informal book series is aimed at providing IT and
business management professionals with the necessary competence for
dealing with all the technical and business problems concerning OSS
adoption and integration.

******************
Overall Objectives
******************

This new book series is aimed at timely providing the technological and
business information for:
+ enabling OSS to become an integral part of systems and devices
  produced by technology companies;
+ inserting OSS in the critical path of the development of complex
  network and embedded products, including methodologies and tools
  for domain-specific OSS testing (also by making laboratory code
  available), as well as certification of security, dependability
  and safety properties for complex systems;
+ ensuring that integrated systems including OSS meet performance
  and security requirements as well as achieving the necessary
  certifications, according to the overall strategy of OSS usage
  on the part of the adopter.

********
Audience
********

The book series is targeted to:
+ professionals, consultants and companies trying to implement a
  OSS-aware IT governance strategy;
+ SMEs looking for a way to attack new markets traditionally held
  by proprietary products (e.g., network security and operation
  centers, Linux-based network switching systems) or reduce costs;
+ OSS development communities wishing to make sure their products
  can become part of dynamically composed complex systems;
+ researchers, MBA and Ph.D. students working on open source
  relations with IT governance  and software engineering;
