It serves as a drop-in replacement for gcc, letting you recompile third-party code with the required runtime instrumentation. A common use pattern would be: CC=/usr/local/bin/afl-gcc ./configure ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ excuse me? It's probably worth pinging upstream about that.
