As far as I can see, 0.9.0 (which is what I've packaged) of Gazebo doesn't include assimp - 0.10.0 does. Maybe there's a debate to be had around 0.9.0 vs 0.10.0 though? I noted in comment #1 that its 0.9.0 rather than the latest release. That's based on the comments from some of the researchers I work with who use this stuff.
