I had the same questions before. here are my solutions so far
There is two ways .. 

1- You can use packer to test your ami and write tests in a way if they 
pass ok, if they fail delete the ami for example 

2- You can use something advanced like the awesome project 'KitchenCI" 

what do you think ?
