*Navigating Pet Safety: SpotOn GPS Fence Reviews for the New Year*

The SpotOn Collar stands out as one of the top GPS dog fences and smart
collars in 2023. But the question that lingers is whether its relatively
high cost justifies the investment. We'll delve into that query right now.

Before we proceed, a crucial time-sensitive note: SpotOn is currently
offering a limited-time 2-day sale (on 10/10/23 and 10/11/23) where you can
snag a $200 discount, reducing the price to $1095. When you visit their
website, wait for approximately 30 seconds, and a popup should appear,
inviting you to enter your email for an additional $250 discount. While you
can't stack these savings (at least to the best of my knowledge), using the
email coupon will bring the cost down to $1045.

In case you miss the sale, there's still a chance to save $100 by applying
the coupon code "BARK."

Now, back to the central question: Is the SpotOn Collar truly worth its
price? In short, the answer is a resounding yes. It ranks as one of the
most effective solutions for allowing your dog to roam freely in your
backyard without the confines of a leash, all while providing you with
peace of mind. I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed by the SpotOn Virtual
Smart Fence and its performance with my own dogs. While I wish it were more
budget-friendly, it remains a unique and exceptional dog device. In fact,
there were no competitors in this realm until Halo introduced its virtual
fence collar. Nevertheless, I find the SpotOn superior to Halo, and I'll
delve into the reasons later in this review. But for now, let's focus on
the collar, which is the primary subject of this discussion.

What Is the SpotOn Virtual Fence?

Many of you might already have physical fencing surrounding your yard for
the safety of your dogs. However, certain situations make physical fencing
unfeasible. Perhaps your homeowners' association prohibits fencing, or the
cost of enclosing a large yard is prohibitively expensive, ranging from
$1500 to a staggering $38,000 or more.

This is where the SpotOn GPS Fence steps in as a practical solution. The
system is entirely virtual, covering your entire yard without any "blind
spots." Moreover, in the rare event that your canine companion manages to
breach the virtual perimeter, the collar keeps track of their location,
making it easy to locate them quickly. The beauty of it is that you won't
need to wrestle with special programs, base units, wires, or any other
complicated installations. All you require is your smartphone to access the
system's full suite of features. Even if you find a physical fencing
solution costing less than $1295, it wouldn't be capable of delivering all
that the SpotOn system does.

In essence, it stands as one of the premier dog GPS fences available, fully
living up to its tagline: "the world's most innovative dog fence."

Who Can Benefit from the SpotOn Collar?

The SpotOn fence is ideal for anyone with an outdoor-loving pup, which, in
other words, encompasses virtually all dog owners. However, there are some
key considerations to determine if it's the right fit for you. We'll
explore these aspects in more detail shortly, but here's a quick rundown:

*Yard Size: *SpotOn performs optimally on properties that are at least half
an acre or larger. Will it work on smaller yards? In my experience,
absolutely. I know a friend with a tiny yard who uses SpotOn to contain
their Shiba Inus.

*Dog Size: *SpotOn Collars are designed for dogs with neck sizes ranging
from 10 to 26 inches.

*Training: *Keep in mind that training your dog to use the SpotOn invisible
fence system is essential, so be prepared to allocate time for this.

*Features of the SpotOn Virtual Smart FenceVirtual Fence System:*

The foremost feature to explore, given its primary purpose, is the virtual
fence system. When I tested the collar, my first concern was how
user-friendly it is in setting up and using it as an invisible fence. I
consider myself tech-savvy, but that doesn't mean I want to spend hours
poring over a manual and trying to figure out the setup. Who has time for
that?

Thankfully, the virtual fence feature of the SpotOn GPS Fence is
straightforward to configure and customize. It not only enables you to
establish up to 20 unique overlapping fences using up to 1,500 automatic
GPS fence posts but also allows you to create virtual fences of any shape
and size, spanning from half an acre to thousands of acres. Let's delve
deeper into the process.

Setting Up the SpotOn GPS Fence:

To establish the GPS fence, you have two options. You can either walk along
the intended fence area or simply draw it within the app. You can see how
this works in the video below.

It's worth noting that walking your property to set up the fences results
in more accurate configurations, but it's not a mandatory requirement. To
me, this accessibility makes the SpotOn Collar more user-friendly compared
to many of its competitors. The whole setup process is straightforward, and
you can observe your fence taking shape in real-time within the app, making
adjustments as needed.

Additionally, you can pause the fence creation to navigate around obstacles
like water or dense vegetation, and SpotOn will automatically create a
straight line through the obstacle when you resume. After completing a lap
around the perimeter, the virtual fence will be automatically programmed
into the SpotOn Collar.

*New Virtual Fence Features Released in April 2023:*

In March, SpotOn pleasantly surprised us by reducing their price from $1500
to $1295 (if you missed it earlier, you can use the coupon code "BARK" to
save an extra $100). In April, they introduced two brand-new features: Keep
Out Zones and Home Zones.

*Keep Out Zones:*

SpotOn's latest feature, Keep Out Zones, allows you to designate off-limits
areas within your existing fences. This feature makes it even easier to
give your dog the freedom to roam without encountering trouble. You can
create fences within your fence around the garden, keep your dog away from
the pool, or prevent playtime in areas with poison ivy with a simple touch.

*Home Zones:*

SpotOn's Home Zones enable you to define areas around your home where
corrections are disabled. This permits your dog to move indoors without
removing the collar, offering them freedom whether they're on the couch or
embarking on an adventure.

With a good understanding of how easy it is to set up and customize your
virtual fence, let's explore how it operates in practice.

*Using the Virtual Fence:*

Activating the virtual fence creates an invisible barrier surrounding your
yard. When your dog approaches the virtual boundary you've configured,
the SpotOn Collar emits a beep to dissuade them from crossing the set
boundary. If the quick beep doesn't deter your dog, the collar issues a
gentle static shock or vibration to discourage them from straying further.

If you prefer not to employ the "shock correction," you can disable it and
rely solely on the beeping sound. However, this means investing more time
in training your dog beforehand so that they understand the significance of
those beeps. This brings us to the training process.

*Training Process:*

All GPS dog fences involve a learning curve for your dog, and SpotOn is no
exception. You can't just put the collar on your dog and expect them to
instinctively grasp what to do. Under no circumstances should you crank up
the static correction level to a high setting and hope for the best
(please, avoid doing this).

Hence, training your dog is a must before they can be introduced to an
invisible fence. SpotOn simplifies this process by providing easy-to-follow
and professional training videos. I highly recommend investing the extra
effort to familiarize your dog with the sounds and light vibrations. This
way, you won't even need to rely on static correction. But if you do need
to use this feature, SpotOn offers 30 different levels of static, twice as
many as Halo.

*GPS Tracking & All Terrain Types:*

You might assume that this device is only suitable for use in standard
settings, such as your home, yard, or local walks. However, what if you are
an adventurous soul who enjoys hiking with your dog in the mountains, by
rivers, or at the lake? Does it still justify the price tag?

Absolutely! Remember that the SpotOn Virtual Fence doubles as a GPS
tracking collar with remarkably accurate tracking capabilities. The collar
simultaneously employs four satellite navigation systems, ensuring precise
location tracking of your dog, irrespective of their location.

However, there is a caveat: certain features require cell service. I
reached out to SpotOn for clarification on this point, as I was among those
confused about when the cell plan becomes essential.

According to SpotOn, "Optional cellular plans enable you to see your dog's
location with the touch of a button, providing automatic breach alerts and
real-time tracking if your dog leaves the virtual fence. SpotOn is the only
smart dog collar that offers a choice of data plans—customers can select
either AT&T or Verizon—so you can opt for the cellular service that suits
your area best."

*True Portability:*

The True Portability feature signifies that you can use this device
wherever you are, be it at home or on the go, while traveling or even in
aquatic environments.

Suppose you're heading on a vacation with your dogs and renting a beach
house or a cabin by a lake. If you want to grant your dog some extra
freedom, simply use the app to draw a new fence, and you're all set to go.

*Tracking:*

One noteworthy feature is the ability to activate the Tracking feature,
which allows you to pinpoint your dog's location within a 3-foot radius. If
you want to know precisely where your dog is at any given moment, even when
the GPS fence feature isn't active, you can keep them wearing the collar.
When your dog moves out of sight, a quick check on the app will reveal
their location.

You might be thinking, "Do I really need to know my dog's whereabouts in my
own yard every moment of the day?" Let me share a story. I have a friend
with an extensive fenced property. Technically, she doesn't need a GPS
fence, right? Yet, she continues to use SpotOn because her dog often chases
squirrels and ends up on the opposite side of the property. Believe me, it
comes in remarkably handy!

*Battery Life:*

The SpotOn Dog Collar is an excellent choice if your dog spends substantial
time outdoors and you require extended battery life. A full charge can last
for up to 22 hours, offering you the freedom to let your dog play and
explore without fretting about the battery running out. Just remember to
recharge the battery when you return home, ensuring it's ready for your
next adventure. A longer-lasting battery reduces the likelihood of collar
function failures and minimizes the risk of losing your dog.

Is the SpotOn Collar Worth the Investment?

In my view, yes, the SpotOn dog collar justifies its price, particularly
now that the cost has been reduced. It's an elite product in the realm of
invisible dog fences. I won't disregard the fact that $1,295 represents a
substantial sum of money, especially during these financially challenging
times. Nevertheless, the peace of mind it affords is invaluable.

Moreover, as previously mentioned, it's considerably more cost-effective
and visually appealing than erecting a physical fence around a large yard.
It significantly alleviates any worries you might have and assists you in
tracking your puppy's movements, whether you're at home or on the move. If
the upfront cost is a concern, SpotOn also offers reasonable financing
options.

*Our Verdict:*

The only aspect I find unattractive about the SpotOn Virtual Fence is its
price tag (again, check the current price on their website). However, the
multitude of features the SpotOn Collar offers, ranging from the four-point
satellite navigation system to the patented True Location™ Technology, more
than justifies its higher cost. It truly provides almost everything you
might desire in a virtual fence device.

Furthermore, they provide flexible financing options, sparing you the need
to pay the entire amount upfront. The versatility of its features played a
pivotal role in convincing me to highly recommend the SpotOn Virtual
Fence Dog Collar to fellow dog enthusiasts. If you choose to acquire the
SpotOn Collar, I'd greatly appreciate it if you use my referral link. And
don't forget to apply the code "BARK" for a $100 discount!
