Different vendors stick different things in ifAlias and ifDesc, so
having the ability to choose which to use for port naming would be nice.
It would also be nice to be able to use the sysName and SysLocation so
that sysName is listed instead of the switch IP.

Help Desk staff at my employer stated that they felt this would make
things easier for them and had asked me to look into adding such
features. I might be able to contribute code to this affect, but need to
spend the time to figure out how best to do it, which would be a
discussion I can move onto the devel list.

Hi guys,

I had a strong feeling that a ticket for that was already filed but I
couldn't find it so I just filed one:

#1172: More information / metadata about switches (network devices)
http://www.packetfence.org/bugs/view.php?id=1172

The Alias idea bears the most bang for the buck. Anyone interested
should consider sponsoring the feature otherwise I'm afraid our
priorities are not there at the moment.

Thanks for the idea!
