I am looking for scaling / performance feedback when running PF under VMware.
In our environment we have about: * 8000+ wired devices, at anyone time we could have about 3000+ online. * 12,000+ wireless devices, 8,000+ online at one time. Our PF configuration will look like: * Basic registration / isolation system * Remote VLANs for wired registration / isolation (using port-security vlan switching on Cisco/HP gear) * 802.1x using FreeRadius for VLAN assignment (for wireless only) * Local DNS/DHCP for registration / isolation VLAN. * Single network interface (all http, dns, dhcp, admin traffic will hit this interface) * NO snort (IDS) (at this time). Why I want to use VMware. 1) High availability. I like idea of abstracting HA from the software. 2) Easy scaling. During move in week we can bump the memory/procs up to meet added capacity. We are using modern HP hardware for the VM hosts and EMC backend disk storage. Will there be any problems with this setup? Anyone else with experience running a larger environment like this? I would like to see other peoples capacity numbers if they don't mind posting them. Bonus points to people who are in a University environment. -- Jason E.
