Oh and you probably also need to issue the following commands if on a RH or

I could be wrong, but I don't think this step is in the admin guide. Before
running the configurator, you should run the following script to finish the
MySQL configuration:
/usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation
The above script will prompt you for a mysql root password. By default it is
blank, so just hit enter when it prompts for the current password, then set
your password as desired.

As usual, did you look in the Admininstration Guide? The install and
configuration process, at least for the basic part, is very well documented.
Moreover, the initial config is click-click-click on a web gui.
