Josh,

I'm not clear on your question, but basically, pfsense is a firewall. 
Packetfence can work in the same network as a firewall - I don't think there 
can be many networks out there *without* a firewall..

I'd suggest a bit of a read of the administration guide, as the various modes 
of operation and network architecture are outlined in detail there.

What network switches do you use? As that will determine which mode of 
operation you use.
