Hello all together,

I have a question about the inline Layer 3 mode and how it exactly works.

To our setup: we have a pf server in inline enforcement setup. We have build up
a routed network to our home office (via vpn). From this home office we have
new clients which route all their traffic to our main servers. When a new
client gets into the network and does e.g. a http call. It is redirected to our
packet fence server (packetfence.exmample.com), as it is the gateway but the
homepage says „the client was not found in the pf database. Please restart your
computer“.
In the Administration Guide there is an information that pf stores ip only in
Layer 3 mode. However in a posting on this email line it was described that all
dhcp traffic from the routed network has to be forwarded to pf server so that
packetfence can registrate the new clients (with ip and mac). At the moment for
us it is difficult to forward all dhcp traffic to packetfence. So my question
is: Is there a possiblity that pf can register new clients which connects the
first time with the server or is the registration always done via the dhcp
informations?

Thanks
Christian Hanster
