How many production VLANs do you have that you want to record IP history
for? You could always throw a tagged trunk port at PF, and create
individual interfaces in PF for every VLAN that you wish to log...

Subject: [PacketFence-users] IP tracking mechanism

Hello listmates,

I have the following question.

It seems like PF needs to track the IP devices and status of the devices it
manages. That is fully understandable and quite reasonable.

Based on the discussion I started earlier:

http://www.mail-archive.com/packetfence-users%40lists.sourceforge.net/msg08621.html

the only way to do that is by replicating the DHCP traffic to your PF server.
Is that accurate? It seems that doesn't have to be as an ARP listing or an
appropriate SNMP request to the appropriate switch/router should do the job.

I am bringing this up because thus far I have failed at making my Cisco
Catalyst switches both issue IP addresses via DHCP to the clients and replicate
that traffic to the PF server. I would certainly be grateful for any input on
how to get this done.

However, if DHCP replication does not happen - are there any other options I
could use? If so, what are they?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

Cheers,

Boris.
