Thanks for getting back to me but I found the answer in /usr/local/pf/lib/pf/vlan/custom.pm, uncommenting the example ShouldAautoRegister did the trick. I just got confused because Packetfence-ZEN 5.2 seamed to do this out of the box but after upgrading to 5.3.1 it did not.
