That is correct, there was no rename. A small group of developers tried to unilaterally take over the ffmpeg project and failed, so they created a fork called libav. The original is still around and still actively developed. Having libav available as an alternative to ffmpeg is a good idea in my opinion (as with mplayer2), but the decision as to which one should be set as the default probably needs a more thought and discussion.
