As you seem to have success to connect to the machine, my next though would be the certificate verification. Do you see any errors in the API log around the time you see the connection error? Do you have the CAcert root certificates imported to your local trust store? For openSUSE there is the package ca-certificates-cacert. If you still see problems, please contact me via PM.
