Hello! Sorry if this is the wrong email/channel to send these matters,
let me know if that's the case.
I was debugging my fingerprint sensor not working, which I am now pretty
sure comes down to windows having updated the on-device firmware but the
driver libfprint-2-tod1-broadcom provided by packman expects older fw.
All that is not important, just background, but basically there's a new
version of libfprint-2-tod1-broadcom: "5.15.377" (current in repo is
"5.15.285").
The 377 version is not available at the source you are using (according
to the upstream url provided:
http://dell.archive.canonical.com/updates/pool/public/libf/libfprint-2-tod1-broadcom/)
but *is* at Canonicals launchpad
(https://git.launchpad.net/~oem-solutions-engineers/libfprint-2-tod1-broadcom/+git/libfprint-2-tod1-broadcom/)
and from Broadcom directly
(https://packages.broadcom.com/artifactory/dell-controlvault-drivers/).
I am not sure why the dell.archive is not updated (the 377 version is
released to Ubuntu noble, jammy and next) and I'm not sure which is best
to use, the Broadcom "artifactory" or Canonicals launchpad, I suspect
you guys have a better idea about all that.
Note however! There is also a 6.x.x series if you look at Broadcoms
index, however the 5.x and 6.x series support different devices. The 6.x
series is usually packaged as "libfprint-2-tod1-broadcom-cv3plus"
(referring to devices in "ControlVault 3 plus" series I presume are used
in newer dell devices). It would be nice to add the cv3plus package but
that's a separate matter. /Supported devices are visible in the udev rules./
Information about what is new/changed is nonexistent in this proprietary
source, but on the windows side a CVE is mentioned, so the new
version(s) are probably patches for this:
https://blog.talosintelligence.com/revault-when-your-soc-turns-against-you/
Updating the package (likely) helps me and anyone going from windows on
their 2021-2024 era dell laptops get a working fingerprint sensor, not
to mention patching the security issue and would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance!
/Max Bäckström
