Hi Shlomi,

> Why didn't you (or anyone) reply to this message of mine?

OK, I'll start with answering this.

Basically I saw the email hit my inbox just before starting work. The
tone of the email caught me off guard and to be honest left me a little
pissed about the attitude in general. So I closed down my laptop and
took the kids to school and headed into work.

The reason I haven't replied is simple. I, like everyone else, have a
life. At the moment it's a very busy one with kids, household, loving
partner, work, chores, gardening, a desire to play guitar better than
the 3 chords I can do now...

I am four letters behind in writing to my mother, I have emails from
friends before chirstmas that I haven't replied to, I have so much to do
in these matters, of which is far more important than many other things,
but still haven't been addressed.

I get home from work and generally after kids, cooking and tidying up
will take a look at where things are with Padre, and spend a bit of time
keeping abreast of what's happening for the coming release... but lately
with what's been going on around the house, I'd rather go sit in front
of the TV, either watching it or playing a bit of Uncharted 2 to keep
one step ahead of son (who is now more than one step ahead of me ).

So basically it's all about what to sacrifice to spend time replying to
an email where the tone and the annoyance clearly show. And to be
blunt, your email wasn't worth it. I figured that I'd get around to it
when I had the time. Time I could be writing "Release 0.56 the missing
release notes"...

So now you see why I didn't put myself out to answer your email
immediately.

Sow.. reap.. whatever. These are just emotional weasel words. Lose
them and I'd be more inclined to assist.

So for the hour I have today to spend time on the laptop catching up,
I'll waste it covering off on this email. There's only so much my
loving partner ( who now thinks I'm the coolest thing on two geeky legs
because of what I do ) can be expected to tolerate while we have so much
to do around the house.

Why the exclamation mark? It's not much less than SHOUTING HI PETER...

The work you do improving the visibility of Padre by keeping it up to date on
Freshmeat is great.

The summary of changes when a release is done is in my opinion one of the more
time consuming tasks I have to do as release manager. Trying to be a bit
original, linking to blogs or peoples journals when mentioned, wrapping up the
changes in the Changes file in a way that a mixed audience will appreicate
takes longer ( by almost 200% ) than it takes me to wrap up a release.

At the moment I do the release at 2100 local time to me, so by the time I'm
finished and get to shutdown my laptop it's getting close to, if not beyond
midnight, and I still have to get up before 7 to sort out kids and the like
before getting to work. I don't have flexible work hours that I can offset
late nights with later finishes.

In this release I simply could not bring myself at the time of the release
itself to write about the changes in detail.

When I do a release announcement it's done using vox.com's editor in my
browser.. it's a royal pain to use to be honest and what you see in the dev
list is a simple copy and paste of the text itself, which is missing the actual
links, however if you notice at the very start of the email is the direct link
to the posting on the vox web site.

I truly expected if people wanted to get all the links that it would be easy
for them to click on the link.

The link is in the blog post. It didn't come through with the copy and paste
of the text in the email.

Yes.. I agree entirely here. The whole point of the release notes is to allow
people to easily see why they would want or need to upgrade. Marketing
regardless of what it is it's for is an important part of the process. And for
that I'll not slack off with a release like I did this time.

It's certainly my plan to do this, as I said earlier, but not today now, as I'm
going back out to the garden to finish cleaning things up.

I've done a few releases now, and each time I spend a lot of it writing
and linking to things for the announcement. To be honest I'll say I'm
never sure just how much people read what I have written... with little
feed back in any way, ( apart from when I miss something or in this case
cheap out on the announcement details )...

I'm glad to hear that in the end what I do prattle on about and what's
put into ( or in this case NOT put into ) the release announcement
really does matter. So I'll make sure that while I hold the job of
release manager that I do better with the marketing side of things and
include the major detail of the release.

Pete.
