Hi Adam, hi Mattia, hi Jens, Mattia, I hope you don't mind being CC'd on this.

Specifically, I have g++ hardwired in the Makefile.PL. This should be the only thing making it unportable. Unfortunately, our toolchain is quite bad when it comes to C++ compilers and particularly detection. I remember some discussion about this on #toolchain. I believe Jens Rehsack was working on improving things a few months back, but I may be misremembering. Jens: Am I remembering correctly? If so, do you think you could come up with some document describing best practices? Writing a book about it wouldn't be necessary. Just a simple outline with pointers. Wx, conceptually, suffers from the same problem. But I believe Mattia went through a great deal of trouble to work around the underlying issues. Mattia, all: What do you think are the chances of bringing C++ compiler detection/support in the toolchain (even if it's just one of the three build tools) to the level that casual XS/C++ module authors like myself don't have to worry about it? I'm not asking you to do it, but I believe you have a much better idea to give any effort some direction.
