I am not sure, but I recall we had this issue due to the fact, that when
"Use External Window" is enabled we use xterm to run the perl script.
(see  Padre/Wx/Main.pm )
If there is not xterm in the machine this silently fails.

Jon, do you have xterm on the machine?
If not, try installing it and hopefully that will fix the problem.
