Introduction

The Singapore Minangkabau Association (SMA), was established on 31 August 1994 as a
voluntary organization. The idea for an organization was originally mooted by a group
of young Singaporean students of Minang descent studying in United States of America
in the mid-1980s. Its formation is a milestone in the history of Minang descents in
Singapore aimed primarily for the Minang community in their preservation, promotion
and development of the Minangkabau culture, tradition and custom and also to raise the
economy of the locals. Hence, the formation of SMA.

In 1995 during an official visit to West Sumatra, the then Governor, Bapak Hasan Basri
Durin conferred the title Custodian of Minangkabau Heritage. Over the years, SMA
gradually assumed the role as the official spokesman for the Minangkabau community in
Singapore.

Vision and Mission

Vision To preserve and promote the Minangkabau culture, traditions and customs and
be the sole Minangkabau Custodian Heritage in Singapore.

Mission To develop and introduce the Minangkabau Heritage to within and outside
Minangkabau community in Singapore.

SMAs focus will be in the following areas:

To be a culture forwarder in line with the call to make Singapore as the Arts
Renaissance City.

To develop and enhance the Minangkabau culture & arts.

To ensure that Minangkabau culture and traditions are brought forward into the
future era.

Activities

>From its conception, SMAs focus has been on cultural and social activities. SMA has
>done many cultural performances showcasing the rich Minangkabau heritage in
>Singapore. These performances were seen by both locals and foreigners. The performers
>were trained by professional trainers from West Sumatra. To enhance SMAs cultural
>group, the West Sumatra Provincial Government donated a complete traditional musical
>instrument set (talempong) in 1996.

To further contribute the Minangkabau culture in Singapore, SMA became an affiliate to
Majlis Pusat (Central Council of Malay Cultural Organizations, Singapore) in 1995. In
this way, SMA can assist Majlis Pusat in promoting the Minangkabau culture to
Singapore. Two members of SMA were elected as "Pituo Minang" or "Elders" by LKAAM,
Padang, West Sumatra in June 2001. LKAAM is the highest body in Indonesia with respect
to Minangkabau culture, customs and traditions.

On the social activities, SMA has been active in assisting the poor and elderly people
both in Singapore and the nearby islands in Riau province, Indonesia. Annually, SMA
will make special visits to these places to donate financially and in kind too.

SMA has also established cultural links with Minangkabaus in Malaysia and Indonesia
and have signed Memorandum of Understandings with:

1) West Sumatra Provincial Government, September 1995

2) West Sumatra Chamber of Commerce (KADIN), March 1996

3) Indonesia National Youth Committee, West Sumatra(KNPI), August 1997

4) Selangor Banuhampu Culture and Social Welfare Association (PKKKB), September
2000
