Russian Hospital Being Deployed At Indonesian Province Aceh
JAKARTA, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- A Russian field hospital is being deployed at Aceh, the Indonesian province stricken hardest by the earthquake and the tidal waves, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported Wednesday.
The Russian embassy in Jakarta told the news agency, 17 epidemiologists, who had been flown by a Russian military plane to Medan, the administrative capital of the neighbouring province of Northern Sumatra, have arrived to Banda Aceh, Aceh's regional capital, Tuesday.
In addition, three Russian transports have landed in Banda Aceh's airport, having brought in equipment for a large mobile field hospital manned by over 150 doctors, according to a Russian diplomat in Sumatra.
The hospital is fitted with 24 high-mobility vehicles enabling the doctors to operate in inaccessible terrain. According to the Russian embassy, up to 10 Russian aircraft are expected in Aceh.
The death toll in Aceh has exceeded 123,000. Indonesian Vice-President Yusuf Kalla said earlier that a million people were left homeless and about a million without livelihood at the island of Sumatra that was close to the epicenter of the earthquake.
The Indonesian government admits that its data are rough and different governmental bodies provide different data.
