Abdullah Reminds Volunteers In Aceh To Behave Themselves

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 15 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Saturday reminded Malaysian volunteers in Aceh to mind their conduct while rendering aid to earthquake and tsunami victims there.

The prime minister said that although they might be angry, they had to control themselves so as not to frighten the people that they had been sent to help.

"We realise that under such circumstances, tempers may flare but don't show it. Smile. Work with the sincere intention to help, make sure that everything runs smoothly," he said at the presentation of a water purification machine to Umno Youth and the Malaysian People's Peace Alliance (Peace Malaysia), here.

The machine is to be sent to Aceh under the H2O for Life programme to provide clean drinking water to the tsunami victims.

Abdullah's reminder was aimed at Malaysian volunteers already in Aceh, one of the areas hardest hit by the Dec 26 earthquake and tsunami, and those intending to go there.

"You are going there to perform an important task, May Allah s.w.t guide all of you," he said.

The prime minister also reminded the volunteers to take all forms of precautions like getting themselves immunised, saying that they were going there not to visit but to work.

Abdullah said sending the water purification machine was a wise move because it would not only supply clean water for the victims but was also cost-effective.

Meanwhile, Umno Youth vice-head Khairy Jamaluddin, who was also present, said the machine cost less than RM500,000 and could produce 10,000 bottles of clean water an hour using river water.

"Ranhill (the company supplying the machine) will set up the machine and train our workers there," he said.

He said two advance teams would be sent to Aceh on Monday and Wednesday to look for a suitable site for the machine which would be sent there as soon as possible.

Khairy also said that Umno called on the Indonesian government to ensure that the children orphaned by the earthquake and tsunami in Aceh remain in the republic and were not taken out by certain movements, especially non-Muslim movements, as the children were mostly Muslims.

He was asked to comment on a news report today that the Indonesian Ulama Council had demanded that the WorldHelp Foundation, a Christian foundation in Virginia, United States, return some 300 children who were taken out of Aceh during the tsunami disaster.

The Washington Post on Jan 13 reported the foundation as saying that the disaster in Aceh presented an opportunity to take out the children, the majority of whom were under 12 years, to change their religion because in normal times the Aceh region was closed to foreigners and missionaries.

Khairy also asked the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to speed up cooperation with Indonesia to build shelters for the orphans.
