Beat Parkinson's with Regular Exercise Publish Date : 2/22/2005 7:35:00 AM Source : Health News ExpressNewsline.com Parkinson's disease can be prevented by regular exercise in young ages. Parkinsons' disease is not easily curable, and prevention could be the best thing. A study done by Researchers in Boston suggests, men who exercised regularly and vigorously early in their adult life might have a lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's is a progressive nervous disease occurring generally after age 50. It causes muscular tremors, rigidity, and slowing of movement. The Harvard School of Public Health researchers said men who were the most physically active at the start of the study cut their risk of developing Parkinson's disease by 50 percent, compared with male study participants who were the least physically active. The 14-year study focused on more than 48,000 men and 77,000 women. During that time 387 (252 men and 135 women) were diagnosed with Parkinson's. Among women in the study, strenuous activity during early adult years was also linked to a lower risk of Parkinson's, but the relationship was not statistically significant, and there was no clear relationship between physical activity later in life and Parkinson's risk. "These are intriguing and promising findings that suggest that physical activity may contribute to the prevention of Parkinson's," said Alberto Ascherio, senior author and associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology. "Clearly leading an active and healthy lifestyle is generally beneficial in protecting against a number of diseases," said Robert Meadowcroft, director of the Parkinson's Disease Society. Research on rats by the University of Pittsburgh published last year showed that exercise prevented degeneration of nerve cells that are normally destroyed by the disease. The study appears in the journal Neurology.
