Indonesia Not Allowing Chicken Leg Imports From US, Europe
Monday, October/10/2005 12:36:26 GMT+7.

Indonesian Agriculture Minister Anton Aprijantono has refuted the allegation that the government plans to allow import of chicken leg quarter (CLQ) from the United States or European countries.

"Rumors that Indonesia will import chicken leg quarter are baseless and we will even reject them if there are requests from certain groups," Anton said on Sunday.

He said rumors that Indonesia would import CLQ were rife lately.

He said he did not expect chicken leg quarter to be imported as the president had never talked about it.

"Certainly, we are not expecting chicken leg quarter as our domestic production is enough to meet the demand. There is even a tendency that national chicken product is excessive due to bird flu illness and oil price hike by more than 100 percent," he said.

The reason why the Agricultue Ministry has rejected the CLQ import is that it is not sure whether chickens in the slaughter houses in US and European countries were managed in a manner that did not contradict the Islamic law.

"Managing slaughtered chicken based on Islamic law or not is a sensitive issue for local chicken farmers and Indonesian Muslims," he said.

He also said poultry breeders in Indonesia had been trying to recover following the outbreak of the deadly bird flu disease.

"If imported CLQ arrives in Indonesia, condition of our poultry breeders will become worse," he said.
