Saudi Announces Wukuf Day To Take Place On Jan 9

From Openg Onn

MECCA, Jan 1 (Bernama) -- The Supreme Judicial Council of Saudi Arabia has declared that Jan 1, 2006, is the first day of Zulhijjah.

The council, in an announcement released through the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Sunday, said that accordingly Wukuf or the grand gathering in Arafat would be on Monday, Jan 9, to be followed by the Aidil Adha on Tuesday, Jan 10.

From there, the pilgrims will move on to Mudzalifah and later to the nearby plain in Mina for the overnight stay for the next three days.

The Meccan authorities had said that everything was in order for the Wukuf, the climax of the pilgrimage at Arafat, a once dry and arid area but now planted with trees at the 10.4 square km plain about 22 km from Masjidil Haram or the Grand Mosque.

The Governor of Mecca Prince Abdul Majeed yesterday visited the three areas where the main pilgrimage rituals would be performed including the stoning rites at Jamrat in Mina, to assess the level of preparedness for the Haj.

Speaking to the local press he hoped that this year's pilgrimage, to be participated by about 2.5 million Muslims all over the world, would be a big success.

Meanwhile, the Senior General-Manager (Haj) of the Malaysian Pilgrims Fund Board (Tabung Haji) Datuk Dr Azmi Ahmad said that the agency was also prepared with infrastructure facilities for the Malaysian pilgrims.

Speaking to the Malaysian media covering this year's Haji season, he said the tents, medical centres and other facilities at Arafah and Mina were being set up to provide comfort for the pilgrims as the guests of Allah.

The first group of pilgrims would leave Mecca for Arafah by bus on 8 Zulhijjah by 2 pm after the Zohor prayers with the entire operation to be completed by 10 pm.

Then, on the evening of 9 Zulhijjah after the Maghrib prayers, he said the pilgrims would leave for Muzdalifah for an overnight stay where they would collect pebbles for the stoning rites at Jamrat in Mina where they would put up for the next three nights before returning to Mecca.
