Menyambung informasi dari teman (lihat email dibawah),
bahwa kemungkinan akan terjadi alga blooming yang
beracun di daerah pesisir Sumatra Barat, tepatnya
mendekati Kep. Mentawai dalam beberapa minggu ini.
Upwelling sudah mulai terjadi disebabkan oleh
pergerakan massa air dingin dari Selatan menuju utara
pesisir Sumatra. hal ini pernah terjadi juga di tahun
1998. Mungkin temen2 yang berdekatan dengan site bisa
membantu memonitor lokasi tersebut, sekaligus juga
menjadi early warning system untuk teman2 yang berada
di daerah sekitarnya.

from JAMSTEC show the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)
alomost reach thesame magnitude like 1994 and 1997-98
IOD.   The latest MODIS Aqua satellite observation
show the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)already caused lower
sea surface temperature at southern latitude of
westernSumatra. 24C water was observed off Mentawai
Island. Very high chlorophyll a wasobserved at the
southern tip of Sumatra. (see attachment) ?We are
expecting thehigh chlorophyll a area will spread
northward as the coastal upwelling continue tosupply
nutrient into surface water.? During my past study in
the Malacca Straits,the surface chlorophyll a will
increase a week after the strong upwelling derivewind
is observed. As the result, high chlorophyll a is
predicted to be observed inMentawai Island within next
few weeks or faster.   ***Continous coastal monitoring
needed along the Mentawai Island, as it have arecord
of extreme harmful algae bloom during during past
1997-98 IOD. The presenthigh phytoplankaton level
might develop into harmful algae bloom (HAB). For
themarine scientist, it will be a good chance to
investigate the theory of"Atmospheric Iron Input from
haze" that cause the HAB in 1997-98.
