How about writing two different callback functions, one for new ROMs that have the
characters in their 'correct' positions, and the other for old ROMs?
Choose the appropriate one as per the macro feature-check code when you set things up
as opposed to making the decision on each cell.
Doesn't require globals... no excess overhead... just a thought...
