I think you must be somehow creating the field in the wrong form.  Make
sure it's in the modal form and not in the underlying form.

The find dialog does exactly what you describe, and it's implemented in a
straightforward way -- no weird tricks.  When you tear down a form, all the
controls in it (including the field) go away.

The only other thing that might be happening is that somehow you're
inducing the field in the modal form to draw before the screen area is
captured (the 'bitmap under' is saved).  Then when the modal form is
removed the saved bitmap (including the bits that look like the field) are
restored.

...so just make sure the field in your modal form isn't drawn until after
the modal form is fully opened.
