You didn't give enough information to answer your question.
If you simply need to index by record, access is almost instantaneous
(i.e. goto record 999). Beyond that, are you looking for ascii text?
binary data? matches on fixed or variable length values?
Whatever you are doing is likely to be able to be optimized.
