I've got a Japanese WorkPad, and it comes with its own Japanese version of
the Desktop software of course, but I'm not really sure whether you need a
Japanese OS to run it. You'd need some method of displaying Japanese text at
the least though, or all the menus'd be gobbledygook (sp!).

Actually I installed it on my Japanese Virtual PC but never launched Palm
Desktop (I just wanted to get my hands on the J-E/E-J dictionary .pdb files
that came with it).. I don't have an English Windows HD image so I can't
test how it'd sync with that.

As far as my experience: I'm running on a Mac, and since they don't even
offer a Japanese MacPac, I'm using the latest English version of Palm
Desktop/Mac from the web. To get it to run with Japanese however, you do
need to patch each of the default conduits so they don't mangle the Japanese
text on the way through, and you also need to the patch Palm Desktop
application so that it can display the Japanese text correctly.. I would
venture that the Windows side might need similar patches?

This patch is a 3rd party freeware patch, BTW -- nothing official, but it
works.

Before I got the WP/J, I was running J-OS III on a PIII, and we needed the
same patch for the desktop software. So I figure it's not a Japanese ROM
thing, just whether or not you have Japanese text on-board your handheld.

Up until the release of the WP/J, there was no Palm OS device officially
sold in Japan at all, so everybody had to deal with this issue, no matter
their platform. I'd assume that everybody who bought the WP/J and uses
Windows would be using the official Japanese desktop software that comes
with it, so I don't know if anyone will have tested a hotsync with English
software/OS. The Pilot Users Group of Osaka meets on the 17th though, I
could ask the Windows users there, then.
