Hi :-)
For getting the dotted lines in a field, I set the underlined flag
in the constructor. This works ok, but when you type in text
in this field, all characters are underlined by a 'full' line
(which 'overwrites' the dotted line).
A day ago I received this mail from Laurence Lundblade, which
finally solves the problem :-)) :
>>It's a bug in the constructor in CW5. It sets up the underline field

So I put a
attr.underlined = 1;
in my Edit_ViewInit() function and the problem disappeared.
I reported this bug (and the solution) to Iambic (Action Names).
They will release a version 2.06, which solves this problem in their
application, in a few days.

I don't understand the visual effect you're trying to describe. I don't
see anything out of the ordinary on the Palm IIIx ROM. Maybe you could put
a screen shot up on a website somewhere?
The underline is normally OR'd over the bottom row of pixels in a
character. That is, only the 'on' dots in the alternating on/off line are
drawn. Any descenders that fall between the dots remain, and other
descenders are already 'on' anyway.
Obviously this becomes more of a problem if you're running the whole OS in
(unsupported) grayscale, and trying to do anything with gray text.
