Several people have asked about using a Japanese WorkPad with the English
Palm Desktop software. Here are some of the issues...
1. As Pres Nevins pointed out, you need a patch if you're using the Mac
desktop software. The problem is that the conduits assume text has to be
transliterated between the MacRoman and PalmLatin character encodings, thus
bytes in the range 0x80 to 0xFF can and will get munged.
2. The Windows desktop doesn't need such a patch, since the PalmLatin
encoding is (roughly) equivalent to Windows code page 1252.
3. If you're using the latest Mac desktop software, then you should be able
to run on an English Mac with the Japanese Language Kit (JLK) installed,
and get some display of Japanese text. You have to set the display font to
Osaka (via Preferences), and even then some characters get munged, but you
should get some amount of Japanese appearing correctly.
4. I'm not sure what you need to do to display Japanese text when using the
latest Windows desktop software.
5. Data in the desktop software won't be sorted properly.
6. Entries from the Address app which contain yomi (pronunciation) data for
first, last, and/or company names will wind up looking odd in the desktop
software. Both the actual name and the yomi data will be concatenated and
displayed as a single entry.
That's what I can think of off the top of my head, though I'm sure there
are many other problems associated with using Japanese text and English
desktop software.
