Isn't one issue that the SortInfo block, like the AppInfo block, is 
designed to be a FIXED length structure. As I understand it, it wasn't 
meant to actually store a table of indices of records, but just some kind 
of flags or things which might indicate the order in which the database 
was actually sorted.

I emphasize that this is just my understanding, and I'm more than willing 
to stand corrected.
As you may (correctly) surmise, I've never used a SortInfo block in any 
of my apps.
