He got it wrong.  It turns *on* 1-bpp.  It's only useful if you specify the
-2 flag, which would otherwise emit *only* a 2-bpp image.

I should probably stress again that when the OS officially supports
grayscale, the flags in the name will NOT be the way to create
multiple-bit-per-pixel images.  If you're hacking with grayscale early,
please be prepared to update your applications.
