I remember from years ago using the following algorithm to calculate square
roots on calculators that lacked it.

Problem: Compute the square root of three.  

Start with estimate. e.g. 2

(3 / 2 + 2) / 2 = 1.75

(3 / 1.75 + 1.75) / 2 = 1.732

(3 / 1.732 + 1.732) / 2 = .... continue until accurate to the
degree desired.

It seems to converge to the correct answer quickly.  I think it is called
Newton's approximation or convergence.
