Well, you could skip all that and go directly to the internet...
Our iDEN 1000plus was announced in February and gives you internet
access via a ppp connection to the phone.  All you need is a serial
cable between your PalmPilot and the phone.  Once you make the ppp
connection and the phone registers it's mobile ip, you're ready to go. 
Any internet application can then do whatever it needs to do.  If you
want to communicate with the phone itself (upload and download phone
lists, user settings, etc.), we will be offering an SDK for that later
this year.  

The service provider is Nextel.  Check with them for launch dates and
network availability.
