Is this standard practice (as far as creating buffers and than passing them
in) or is setting the length of the buffer in the resource and than throwing
it in the buffers space? Or does it depend on the situation? I have seen
examples of both - buttons and form titles, for example, seem to throw text
into an already created buffer in the resource. This method is much
cleaner. Are these types of things being noted in the new documentation?

You shouldn't just replace the text of the label in a control. If you do
this, the OS has no way of knowing the text is different! Use CtlSetLabel
instead. CtlSetLabel will do the right thing to make sure the selector
trigger size changes.
