I think it has something to do with an unitialized variable.  I can 
change the behavior by setting a variable.  The variable (Word var) 
was assumed to be initialized to something upon program startup (0).
Maybe I assumed too much.  I don't know if it is the cause or just a 
symptom.

Once I set that variable to any legal value, the problem goes away.  
I am still trying to find the exact cause.
