Here's the item Keith referred to to save everyone time:

>When you zip a binary file (this includes just about anything, including
>Microsoft Word, PageMaker, etc.) that is intended to go to a non-Macintosh,
>you should make sure that the MB and the LF indicators are both OFF
>(hollow) for each file in the archive. The MB indicator is a circle in the MB
>column, and the LF indicator is a square. If either of these indicators is
>filled, then click on it to switch its setting. (The MB setting means
>convert to
>MacBinary, and the LF setting means translate linefeeds; neither of these
>is appropriate for a binary file going from a Mac to an IBM.)

We used to use ZipIt as well. We never had a problem that I know of with
prc files, but the gif files (images from our manuals that were
downloaded in the same Zip archive) couldn't be viewed by many people. At
first I thought it was the way Graphic Converter was preparing gif files,
but that turned out not to be true. Just taking the same files and
running them through PKZip on Windows produced perfectly readable Zip
archives, including the gif files. And I just checked the problem above
and the "MB" and "LF" indicators are both hollow in our default mode,
meaning that the problem above is definitely not the only problem with
ZipIt.
