>Can anyone give
>me any advice on how databases are implemented.

That can be a fairly complex topic. Two suggestions: Get the Rhodes
McKeehan book "Palm Programming", and also look for an article called
"Pilot Memory/DBMS Primer" by Kenneth Albanowski in the July/Aug 1997 issue
of Handheld Systems. You can find it at www.cdpubs.com in the online
Handheld Systems achives. There's probably a lot of other articles there
you might find interesting/useful. (Truth-in-lending clause: that's my
company's web site).

>Can you purchase databases as separate programs?

There are two commercial forms/database products: Satellite Forms
(www.puma.com) and Pendragon Forms (www.pendragon-software.com). There are
also at least two fairly well-supported shareware products. Go to
PilotGearHQ (www.pilotgear.com) and look for JFile and HDBase.

I hope that helps.

Steve Mann
