Palm and IRDA

Help...
I'm in the middle of using Code Warrior and a Palm V to program a hand held
remote replacement.  What I am looking to do is send out a canned ASCII
string over the iRDA port of the Palm V.  Is this possible?  The string
is in the format of STX [MESSAGE] PAD ETX, at a baud rate of 9600.  How can
I output data to the iRDA port directly?  Can I use the standard IRDA API
provided with Code Warrior? Any assistance or advice would be great..
