Put a wireable box in between so you can connect individual pins through
an ampmeter (most DVMs will do this).

It probably won't damage it, but it probably doesn't have enough power to
activate the interface. I had a numeric pad that had a similar problem -
it needed a few more mA than the palm could provide.
But it depends on how much the interface needs - if it is merely a level
shifter it should work.
