I would have thought you'd have noticed by now, that Palm rarely does
things just because they look cool :-)
The different illumination (i.e. glowing "black" pixels) is a property of
the newer screens. It was our choice whether to invert the screen display
or not (as is obvious by the twiddle-dot-dot-8 shortcut), and our
assessment that the considerably improved screen (during normal lighting
conditions and in the dark) was worth the tradeoff of decreased contrast in
a small range of light conditions. It certainly wasn't a case of us not
noticing the effect - there was plenty of internal discussion on the topic.
