The only reason I've never done it is because of the remote possibility
of destroying some innocent's data due to a bug.

Yeah! Why not delay the payload? Have it happen in 5% of the cases.
Makes it hard to detect by crackers, but may scare consumers off cracks.

The code is a database of type 'appl'. I never looked into it, but it
probably has one record, and may be handled just like any other
database.
