Actually, DmQueryRecord will return NULL without a fatal error here.
This, to my knowledge, is the best way to see if the record at a given
index is deleted.  You should compare the results of DmNumRecords and
DmNumRecordsInCategory(db, dmAllCategories) (from memory, check the docs
if I misspelled something) to see if you actually have a ton of deleted
records sitting around.  You said you hotsync frequently.  Is this using
the standard Windows/Mac HotSync Manager?  If you are using e.g.
pilot-xfer on Unix, deleted records are not finally deleted until you do
pilot-xfer --purge.
